planning a vacation in the future can you help?

We live in the southern part of Texas. It usually doesn’t even get cold enough to wear a jacket!! My husband and I are thinking of taking our children on vacation one year to “somewhere” where there is snow and mountains. (Open to suggestions!!!!!!)
What age do children start to ski? Is it something they can catch on to right away, or is it like riding a bike-months and months of practice??
If the children are not skiing, are there other activities they can partake in?
Also, we have never driven in snow so if we drive our own vehicle, do we have to purchase special snow tires? Or, would it be safer and easier for us to find alternate means of transportation.
I am really trying not to sound stupid…..buy I really am clueless!!
